4 Common Ruts People Get Stuck In

In Cultivate on April 6, 2010 at 12:08 am

This is a new series of posts related to Common Ruts People Get In. I will unpack and define one rut per week, explaining the implications and offering potential “rut busters” to help you and your group bust out of ruts.

How do you know when you are stuck in a rut? How do you know when your group is stuck?

Four Common Ruts People Get Stuck In:

1. Insanity

2. Stupidity

3. Superficiality

4. Conformity

Question of the Month: What ruts do you or your group tend to get stuck in?

I’d love to hear your feedback.

  1. The rut I get into most of the time (and I’m not sure it fits in the 4 listed) is getting caught up in the busyness of life and ignoring my relationship with God. A byproduct of that busyness is being superficial with my relationships and not giving the time or effort to have more deep and meaningful conversations.

  2. Starting late. Everyone seems to arrive at exactly the same time and we start to chit chat and we’re all such good talkers, time gets away from us, and then we have to get ourselves back on track. Fortunately we’re all OK with the abrupt transitions.

  3. I know I’m stuck in a rut with my group when I find myself making excusing about why I don’t need to go to group that week. Same seems to apply to others in our group when attendance gets inconsistent.

The typical ruts our group can sometimes get in is only answering the study questions rather than sharing personal experiences or asking difficult questions about the topic. I’ve found though that if I am quick to share and not afraid of what the rest of the group might think of me, others tend to feel comfortable to share as well.

    Thanks!

  4. If I’m honest, I fall into all four of these ruts at times. Insanity starts for me when I’m too focused on me. Stupidity happens when I’m too prideful to deal with my sin in a healthy way – see James 5:16. I’m with Randy on the superficiality one. To me, conformity is the obedience factor. I may know God’s Word, but am I obedient? The truth is too often I’m not.

  5. One woman recently shared with me, “We have so much to learn in our walk with Christ….being rookies and all. We can’t even imagine being in a rut! Our spiritual growth is progressing nicely. Everything is so fresh and new to us. On the lighter side…I do get into a “slight” rut…trying to figure out what to serve for refreshments every week.”

  7. Our group gets stuck in a rut, when honestly, we continually get caught up in the busyness of life. Some are habitual about being too tired to come to group because they are too tired from being too busy. Group is where you come to get refueled. As a host, it becomes frustrating because it would be very easy for me when I’m tired to just cancel, but I don’t, because I have so many other people counting on me and I am accountable to God.
